Preparing for your session
Sessions take place within the first 2-3 weeks of life so contacting me as soon as possible is important.
Before your session
If at all possible, try-keeping baby stimulated and awake an hour or so before the session; a bath usually helps in keeping them awake. It’s best to start on a full belly so feeding him/her right before you put them in the car seat to head my way is best. or you can feed them right when you get to my studio. Please dress him/her in a button down or zipper outfit to make it easier to change them.
Parents, please wear something light as I keep the studio around 80-85 degrees so it gets quite warm. This is to help your little one to drift off into a nice deep sleep and to keep them that way. If you are planning on taking parent photos, I recommend plain black or white shirts (think tank top or form-fitting t-shirt) so that the baby is the primary focal point. I typically shoot from the waist up so that it is flattering to moms since I know how self-conscious we can be about our bodies after having a baby!
All I need you to bring is a paci if he/she takes one, formula (if applicable), and diapers.
You don't need to bring anything else to your session. I will have plenty of props such as head pieces (headbands/bonnets), wraps, and some outfits available. You can bring up to one sentimental item in, but it's not a guarantee that it will make its way into the shot. For example, if you or your spouse are in the military, you can bring in your boots or hat that I can pose with baby. I try to keep it as easy as possible for you so that all need to do is pretty much show up and let me do all of the work for you!
During your session
I will have water/juice available for parents. Sessions can take up to 2-4 hours even with a very sleepy baby. It's all completely dependent on baby! I have a comfy sofa and most parents take advantage of this little break and relax. If you're exclusively breastfeeding, that's perfectly fine. We will take breaks as we need to. I will play a white noise machine during the session to mimic the sounds of the womb.
My approach is very natural as far as posing. I take a lot of prop shots with their body posed to what they are in the mood and comfortable for! You can take a look at my portfolio for ideas.
I go with the flow of the baby on what shots I take. Some like to be wrapped and others do not. Some like to be on their belly and others do not so I do not guarantee certain poses, but I promise I will get as many great shots as I can! It is my job to create the most stress-free experience with beautiful photos for you to enjoy the rest of your life!
When should I book?
I take a limited amount of newborn sessions per month so that no matter when your baby comes (early or late!) I will be able to fit you in. This also means my schedule can fill up quickly so I recommend booking early rather then later. I will stay in contact with you the closer it gets to your due date!
Can you photograph my other children?
Yes! I am always happy to incorporate siblings into the session as this is an exciting time for the entire family! I do require these take place at the beginning of the session and that grandma or dad can take siblings to the park or home immediately after they are finished. The sessions can be long and hot for little ones!
Do you provide props?
I provide everything needed including hats, wraps, headbands, backdrops, props etc for your session! I even have extra wipes and burp cloths on hand for those extra accidents.
Can I include something I already own?
I'd be happy to include something in your session that is of sentimental value. I just ask that you send me a picture ahead of time so I can plan, if possible. While I love incorporating special pieces into sessions, I recommend that parents not buy their own headbands or outfits. Most pieces that are available to non-photographers will be too large for a true newborn, even if marked as a newborn size.
Do you do other types of sessions?
Yes! I absolutely love the fact that I can grow with the families I work with. In addition to newborns, I do milestone sessions during their first year, as well as family sessions. I take on a limited amount of full family sessions in the fall and usually offer mini sessions as well. Priority is always given to returning customers.
